Church Staff

Robert Ponder has a background in ministry that began as a child. He grew up in a pastor's home studying God's Word and learning firsthand how to lead and serve by his dad's example. He is grounded in biblical truth and seeks God's guidance first in all areas of ministry. God has been training him all his life for the work He has gifted him to do... serving and leading as a Pastor. God has given Robert a love for His Word and a love for His people. The Ponders also have a love for the family of God at Skyland First Baptist Church. Skyland is rooted in their hearts as it was the first church God led them to when they began their search for a place to serve and grow as a family.

Robert and his family came to Skyland First Baptist Church in 1999 and served here in many capacities until September 2008. During his time here at Skyland, Robert served as Youth Director, Sunday School Teacher, taught Wednesday night bible study, attended youth camps, and mission trips. He was ordained and served as a deacon and he was also ordained as a Pastor at Skyland in 2008. God called him to Mt. Gilead Baptist Church in Mills River in September 2008 where he previously served.

Robert and Lisa met at his dad's church as kids. They have been married for 30+ years and have two children, Logan and Madison.

"I believe a church has to continue to stay relevant in today's culture by first staying true to the principles on which is was founded. Secondly, I believe we need to bring all age groups together through Christ-centered worship and Bible study. With the leadership of the Holy Spirit, I believe Skyland First Baptist Church will continue to grow and positively impact the Kingdom of God.
